Life on the Frontier

American Idol may be the most popular reality TV show right now but, I've found one I'm addicted to. It's Ranch House on PBS. It is an reenactment of what life was like or a Texas Ranch in 1867.

I would love to participate in an experience like this. I am sure it is very difficult to go from all the modern day conveniences to life before electricity but, it would be worth the discomfort.

Anybody seen the show? Would you do something like that. Wouldn't it be an amazing experience for kids.

  • We've been intently watching the show too.

During a summer in high school, I stayed at bible camp and worked at a nearby ranch in western south dakota. Watching this show makes me think of that. Especially the scene where they were digging fence post holes.

When I came back, I was in good shape, had an excellent tan and alot of freckles. Maybe I need to get away from the kids and work on a ranch again :)

  • I love the reenactment shows they do on PBS! They did one during Victorian times and one during WW2, both set in England, and another in pioneer days called Frontier House, I believe. Love this kind of stuff! And Yes I would have done any of them. What a great chance to live in someone else's shoes and gain greater appreciation for what we have. I didn't know they were doing this one, I'll check it out.

  • I have never seen this one, but yes, that sounds fun to do with the whole family. This summer when I come back to visit, my girls will be doing a week long pioneer girl day camp at the pioneer museum in my mom's town. They have already done this once, and can't wait to do it again this summer. They make bows and arrows, and earth huts, learn to cook like the pioneers, it's very fun for them.

  • I haven't seen this one, will have to have a look for it.

My Uncle wanted us to do something like this way back when for our family reunions. I am sure it would have been fun.

  • Isn't this basically the same thing as camping... but with a Ranch house instead of a tent?

  • I'll have to watch it sometime. I've watched their shows like Colonial House and Pioneer House (or something like that) but that was awhile ago. I enjoy those shows too. Don't know if I'd survive living that way though. ;o)

  • Yes, I watchedd. Wasn't it funny how poorly they did in the end? I liked Colonial House and Frontier House better than this one.

  • Oh, and I could totally take on the challenge of living off the land....and then cry for air conditioning and hot running water.
